{"id":460,"date":"2016-06-13T20:38:10","date_gmt":"2016-06-13T10:38:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/?p=460"},"modified":"2016-06-14T01:38:34","modified_gmt":"2016-06-13T15:38:34","slug":"xcarve-tutorial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/2016\/06\/13\/xcarve-tutorial\/","title":{"rendered":"X-Carve Tutorial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a strange machine in the workshop!<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s big and interesting, but\u00a0how do you make it do\u00a0something useful?<\/p>\n<p>This post\u00a0will answer that, though it won&#8217;t make you a master machinist in one go.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll assumes that\u00a0you already made a design, and now you want to\u00a0fabricate\u00a0it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_467\" style=\"width: 1013px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-467\" class=\"wp-image-467 size-full\" title=\"Here's one I prepared earlier...\" src=\"https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/backboard1.png\" alt=\"backboard1\" width=\"1003\" height=\"814\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/backboard1.png 1003w, https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/backboard1-300x243.png 300w, https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/backboard1-768x623.png 768w, https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/backboard1-370x300.png 370w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1003px) 100vw, 1003px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-467\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here&#8217;s one I prepared earlier&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<h1>Part 0: X-Carve and Easel<\/h1>\n<p>The X-Carve comes with some cloud-based software called &#8220;Easel&#8221;.<br \/>\nThere&#8217;s been plenty of hate directed at it.\u00a0Easel\u00a0is nowhere near perfect, but it <strong>can<\/strong> be wrangled into submission, and it can even be useful.<\/p>\n<p><em>If you have complex requirements you <strong>might<\/strong> actually need something more advanced.<\/em><br \/>\nIt&#8217;s possible to side-step Easel entirely, but\u00a0it is way\u00a0more complex, and not necessary for 95% of users.<br \/>\nNot typically worth it.\u00a0So use Easel. Grumble if you want.<\/p>\n<p>Easel works in the browser. Boo. On the plus side;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All your projects are associated with your account, so they follow you around.<\/li>\n<li>You can complete\u00a0a lot of the work (All of Part A and Part B below) before you even get to the workshop or in front of the X-Carve PC.<\/li>\n<li>If you login to Easel on\u00a0the X-Carve PC using an &#8220;Incognito&#8221; browser tab, then you&#8217;ll see only your account, and\u00a0nobody else will mess with or be confused by your stuff after you close the tab.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_468\" style=\"width: 959px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-468\" class=\"wp-image-468 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/easel.png\" alt=\"easel\" width=\"949\" height=\"631\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/easel.png 949w, https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/easel-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/easel-768x511.png 768w, https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/easel-451x300.png 451w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 949px) 100vw, 949px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-468\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;I am Easel!&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<h1>Part A: Import<\/h1>\n<p><em>Easel only supports SVG import, not DXF.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Lots of scaling issues can occur when passing SVG files between programs. Blech.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a whole section just on getting your design\u00a0<strong>into<\/strong> Easel &#8211; I have found a process that works:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Get source file.<br \/>\n<em>My CAD software outputs DXF.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Grumble at Easel for not supporting DXF import yet,<br \/>\n<em>and that SVG is a terrible format for parts with physical dimensions.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Start a new Inkscape document.<br \/>\n<strong>Import<\/strong>\u00a0the DXF file.\u00a0<em>(Do not <strong>open<\/strong>\u00a0the DXF file or the dimensions will be correct in Inkscape but\u00a0wrong in Easel!)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Import<\/strong>\u00a0any other shapes\/files you want to cut, and arrange them how you like.<\/li>\n<li>Go to document properties, resize drawing to selection, zero margins.<\/li>\n<li>Here&#8217;s the magic bit:<br \/>\n<em>This joins only\u00a0the separated parts of each shape together, and allows Easel to know what &#8220;inside&#8221; and &#8220;outside&#8221; means.<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Select all.<\/li>\n<li>Ungroup.<\/li>\n<li>Select all.<\/li>\n<li>Path &gt; Combine.<\/li>\n<li>Choose the &#8216;Edit Path By Nodes&#8217; tool.\u00a0\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding: 0; border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/node_edit.png\" alt=\"node_edit\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Drag a selection rectangle around the whole\u00a0design.<\/li>\n<li>Join nodes. <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding: 0; border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/node_join.png\" alt=\"node_join\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Leave node editing mode.<\/li>\n<li>Select the design. (now a single path)<\/li>\n<li>Path &gt; Break apart.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Save as an Inkscape SVG.<\/li>\n<li>Select all, look up in the toolbar where it says height and width, set view to millimetres. Jot down\u00a0what it ways the actual dimensions should be.<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Think about whether those numbers are\u00a0realistic!<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Start\u00a0a new Easel project.<br \/>\nImport SVG, choose file.<br \/>\nCheck that the dimensions <strong>match\u00a0<\/strong>what you expected.<br \/>\n<em>If not, swear. Try to figure out where you went wrong.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Part B: CAM<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>CAM stands for &#8220;computer aided manufacturing&#8221;; how to get from a model to instructions that make a physical part.<br \/>\n<\/em>This step isn&#8217;t particularly difficult, but it&#8217;s important that you\u00a0pass the correct instructions to the machine!<\/p>\n<h2>Steps <em>(Summary)<\/em><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Import the SVG file or files.<\/li>\n<li>Specify\u00a0tool, material, dimensions.<\/li>\n<li>Choose cutting settings for each path.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Carve&#8230;&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><em>General Tips<\/em><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Easel interface lets you tell it what sort of material\u00a0you have and its dimensions.<br \/>\n<em>(It also may need reminding about the total bed size &#8211; about 800&#215;800 mm)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>A 3D view of the stock and design\u00a0show up in the preview window, which you can resize smaller to have more room in the working window.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><em>Path Planning<\/em><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Easel assumes that EVERY drawn path will have one cutting operation on it. Selecting the path shows you the options.<\/li>\n<li>You can choose from;\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Outline<\/span> on the line, inside, or outside.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Fill<\/span>. <em>(Which seeing as you&#8217;re doing the opposite is an odd naming choice)\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s no specific &#8220;drill&#8221; operation; if you want a small round hole you draw a small round hole and choose &#8220;inside&#8221; outline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>You can specify the depth of the cut:\n<ul>\n<li>By default each cut goes to the full depth of the material.<\/li>\n<li>You can adjust depth\u00a0with the vertical slider.<\/li>\n<li>You can have a path that does not cut at all by setting the depth to zero. <em>(It will turn white)<\/em>\u00a0This can be useful when\u00a0your stock is already the same size as the outline and you just want to cut inside it.<\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s no specific &#8220;drill&#8221; operation; if you want a small round hole you draw a small round hole and choose &#8220;inside&#8221; outline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The 1\/8&#8243; bit is versatile, and a good choice for many\u00a0projects.<br \/>\nPlus; chances are it&#8217;ll already be mounted in the spindle. Easy!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><em>Machining\u00a0Limitations<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-477\" src=\"https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/31de775cbb07ff9e1.png\" alt=\"corners\" width=\"478\" height=\"245\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The milling bit <strong>can&#8217;t reach<\/strong>\u00a0into corners smaller than its diameter &#8211; you may need to file the corners out later, design your thing to have smooth curves, or be fancy and make your own &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.100kgarages.com\/images\/editorial\/work_withFabber-Tbone.gif\" target=\"_blank\">dog bones<\/a>&#8220;.<br \/>\n<em>(Easel doesn&#8217;t know how to do them)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>When cutting holes, the diameter has to be larger than the bit &#8211; or Easel will ignore it. Using the 1\/8&#8243; bit, the holes should be at least 3.3mm.<br \/>\n<em>(Pressing the &#8220;simulate&#8221; button will show whether a hole will end up being cut)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>The bed and the material\u00a0are never\u00a0perfectly flat. You should overstate the\u00a0material&#8217;s thickness <strong>slightly\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; to ensure that cuts go all the way through.<br \/>\nAn extra 0.2 mm is often plenty.<\/li>\n<li>If\u00a0a piece is completely cut\u00a0away,\u00a0it could jump up and get in the way of the\u00a0bit. This can be dangerous, noisy and embarrassing, not to mention ruin your piece!\n<ul>\n<li>Easel\u00a0supports tabs. Tabs\u00a0are little bits that don&#8217;t get cut out, so that the pieces stay put until you cut the last bits by hand.<\/li>\n<li>There are some small hand-held saws with a hacksaw blade that are perfect for removing tabs &#8211; check in the blue tool chest.<\/li>\n<li>To edit tabs on a path;\u00a0Click on the path.\u00a0In\u00a0the cut menu enable tabs, and\u00a0choose\u00a0how many and how large to make them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_469\" style=\"width: 898px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-469\" class=\"size-full wp-image-469\" src=\"https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/easel_toolpath.png\" alt=\"This is what &gt;300 holes looks like in 'simulate'\" width=\"888\" height=\"564\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/easel_toolpath.png 888w, https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/easel_toolpath-300x191.png 300w, https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/easel_toolpath-768x488.png 768w, https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/easel_toolpath-472x300.png 472w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 888px) 100vw, 888px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-469\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is what &gt;300 holes looks like in &#8216;simulate&#8217;<\/p><\/div>\n<h1>Part C:\u00a0Machining<\/h1>\n<p>In order,<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Spoil Board<\/span> &#8211; Find some material\u00a0about the same size to go underneath and catch when the bit goes too deep. It&#8217;s best if it&#8217;s the same material or softer.<br \/>\n<em>Yes, the MDF\u00a0bed could cope with\u00a0some abuse, but better to take care of it!<\/em><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Material Alignment<\/span> &#8211; be sure the\u00a0cuts\u00a0go where you want them to!<br \/>\nYou&#8217;ll usually want to align your\u00a0material\u00a0so that it&#8217;s\u00a0perpendicular to the board.<br \/>\nOne method I\u00a0like is;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Drive\u00a0two identical screws into the horizontally separated bed holes, leaving them sticking up.<\/li>\n<li>Put\u00a0the spoil board\u00a0behind them,\u00a0then pull a straight edge back\u00a0onto\u00a0the screws &#8211; perpendicular!<\/li>\n<li>Place the material on top, and align the edge of the material with the spoil board &#8211; now it&#8217;s perpendicular too.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Clamping<\/span> &#8211; got to stop the material from moving!<br \/>\n<em>This takes some time, be patient and do it properly.<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Make sure you have <strong>plenty<\/strong> of clamping spots.<br \/>\n<em>Especially if the material was a bit warped &#8211; it may shift up\/down a bit as parts are cut out and mess up your depths or\u00a0tabs.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Make sure the clamps are\u00a0tightened down <strong>well<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<em>If the material moves, the work\u00a0will be ruined, you&#8217;re going to have a bad day, and the machine could be damaged.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Make sure the clamps are\u00a0<strong>away<\/strong> from\u00a0where the cuts will go!<br \/>\n<em>This is important &#8211; running into\u00a0even the wooden part of a clamp\u00a0might damage the machine or break a bit.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Insert Bit<\/span> &#8211; <em>skip if already the right size.<\/em>\n<ol>\n<li>There are two spanners in the middle drawer.<br \/>\nPlace both on the spindle and turn the lower one left, the upper one right.<br \/>\nCarefully loosen until you can get the old bit out.<\/li>\n<li>Place the new bit in the spindle, with plenty of\u00a0shaft inside.<br \/>\nIf the shaft is a different diameter too, then\u00a0the collet (inside the spindle) will need to be changed as well.<\/li>\n<li>Tighten\u00a0back up again until the bit is firmly seated.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Head Alignment<\/span> &#8211;\u00a0set up\u00a0the head in the right place.<br \/>\nWith the machine <strong>off <\/strong><em>(push the big red button)\u00a0<\/em>gently pull\/push the gantry and the head until the bit is right on the bottom-left corner of your work.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>If cutting shapes from inside the\u00a0material, maybe position\u00a0the head away from the edge. (to avoid the clamps)<br \/>\nIf cutting inside an\u00a0entire piece of material you&#8217;ll use, ensure the head is\u00a0right on the corner of the material.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The gantry should be pulled\/pushed from the center,\u00a0so that one\u00a0side isn&#8217;t\u00a0stressed.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The head can be moved up and down by twisting the pulleys on top.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Carve&#8230;<\/span>\u00a0&#8211; noise time!\n<ol>\n<li>Switch the machine back\u00a0<strong>on.<\/strong>\u00a0(twist the big red button)<\/li>\n<li>Check one more time that you&#8217;ve got exactly what you want in Easel, then press &#8220;Carve&#8230;&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;ll see a series of final checks &#8211; go through\u00a0them one by one.<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;Yes, I <strong>have<\/strong> clamped down the material&#8230;&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li>When asked to start the spindle motor;\n<ol>\n<li>Click\u00a0the button on-screen to raise the head, then<\/li>\n<li>Flick the spindle switch next to the read button to &#8216;On&#8217;, then<\/li>\n<li>Close the lid, then<\/li>\n<li>Click the button on-screen to acknowledge that the spindle is now running.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Then it will start moving! Hooray!<br \/>\nThe\u00a0initial speed may be alarming, but as long as you\u00a0have set up the design and stock\u00a0correctly, it will stop in\u00a0<strong>just<\/strong> the right place to start the first cut.<\/li>\n<li>Once started, you can\u00a0fold the PC screen down and close the drawer.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-470\" src=\"https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/easel_cutting-1024x760.jpg\" alt=\"easel_cutting\" width=\"584\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/easel_cutting-1024x760.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/easel_cutting-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/easel_cutting-768x570.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/easel_cutting-404x300.jpg 404w, https:\/\/mindbleach.com\/words\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/easel_cutting.jpg 1286w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Watch<\/span> &#8211; closely, <em>like you&#8217;re babysitting a dozen toddlers\u00a0in a knife shop.<\/em>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>The X-Carve is not like a 3D printer or a laser cutter!<\/strong><br \/>\nIf something goes wrong, it can go wrong badly, quickly.<br \/>\nHere&#8217;s some interesting reading on just one kind of failure:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.cnccookbook.com\/2014\/11\/19\/survive-first-cnc-router-fire\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/blog.cnccookbook.com\/2014\/11\/19\/survive-first-cnc-router-fire\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Stand right there, don&#8217;t go back to your seat, don&#8217;t go to the bathroom.\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nCross your legs if you have to.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Know where the big red button\u00a0is.\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nEnsure you\u00a0have a hand free to hit it, if you need to.<\/li>\n<li><em>If you have not selected to use tabs on your cuts,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Be especially wary when the machine finishes cutting<\/strong>\u00a0a piece\u00a0completely\u00a0away.\u00a0It can jump out\u00a0and get trapped between the\u00a0bit and the material. Everywhere! Shop-vac time.<\/li>\n<li>If you used tabs, take a<\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Marvel at your lovely design&#8230;<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a strange machine in the workshop!
